Established in 1981 and incorporated in 1984, the South Bay Literacy Council is a non-profit all-volunteer group working towards improving literacy. Headquartered in Torrance, the organization is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America. SBLC is staffed and operated entirely by volunteers. The council relies solely on private sector donations and receives no government funding. SBLC is committed to providing free tutors to functionally illiterate adults seeking to learn to read, speak, and write English. SBLC conducts training workshops for tutors, and coordinates literacy activities throughout the South Bay area of Los Angeles. SBLC offers both group and individual tutoring in 16 South Bay cities and is the only council with computer learning centers to facilitate learning English. |
